Fall From Grace

Fall from Grace

Autumn/Winter musings from Atelier….

Now lets not cry over the evident nip in the air… as if that’s all we have to worry about?! Despite our suspended sentence back indoors, I do believe there’s plenty to look forward to through Autumn and Winter. Someone once told me that we ‘choose our own focus’ and now more than ever, we require a monumental positivity shift for self preservation! We need to re-align our focus like my Scandinavian forefathers and adopt a Hygge vibe. I personally love a return to chunky boots and cosy knits at this time of year, this season’s fashion won’t disappoint and there are ways to embrace Hygge life – even on a budget. Whether it’s creating your own Spa environment at home, just enjoying the process of cooking a hearty, seasonal soup, or reading something uplifting by the fire- we have some ideas to pick you up, when you inevitably Fall…

With the colder weather parked we will usually notice a change in how we feel. Our immunity, mood, appetite, skin and hair texture shift. The contrast from colder temperatures outside vs indoor central heating can leave skin dry, the addition of wearing masks can wreak havoc with normally clear skin- so our in house MUA Annabelle has advice for skin preparation and how to update your make up simply for Autumn.

Skincare for Autumn & Winter

By Annabella

The change in the elements can unfortunately leave skin feeling parched and dull. My top tip to keep your skin looking and feeling fresh is to introduce layering to your skincare regime. After double cleansing (a must) simply introduce a rich oil application prior to your moisturiser. My favourite is Miracle oil from Wild Source Apothecary.

If your Summer foundation is too light, but your Winter foundation too heavy during this transition- I also love to cocktail a drop of a serum into my base. This will soften out the coverage (making your product go further), nourish the skin and create a more ‘dewy’ effect. Vita Liberata’s age defying serum even deposits a very subtle, hint of tan daily. Don’t fear less coverage ladies! Applying faux freckles has actually become a trend this year, so if you are lucky enough to rock the real deal- I applaud you.

When we switch up our seasonal wardrobe, a quick stock take of make up is also advisable. Most of your staples should translate, but why not invest in a couple of new products to update your look? I am a huge fan of a deep berry tone lipstick on an otherwise, fresh, nude base – Laura Mercier and Bare Minerals offer a stunning range. Or play with a slick of block colour, with epic lashes for drama at night and let your eyes do the talking.

Also… if you have a little time on your hands, cleanse those brushes! What to use? Well actually the best cleanser by far, for my brushes, is Label M’s Gentle Cleanse shampoo. Your make will feel brand new after a through clean and of course keeping your skin bacteria free, will promote a clear and glowing complexion to work with.

What about our hair?

Your skin and hair behave like similar beasts. I am suffering currently from from uncontrollable frizz and split ends galore- but there’s no need to panic, we just have to re-visit a different regime at this time of year. Changing your hair products from time to time can dramatically improve condition, when we are convinced our hair needs a desperate chop. For those looking for a quick fix I’m a huge fan of Olaplex’s new treatment ‘0’. It’s an in salon service only taking 20 mins at an intro price of £25. It can be added to any cut or styling appointment (not in conjunction with colour) but must be booked. After this treatment your hair feels plumped, soft and repaired. Scheduling an Olaplex 0 treatment once per month would be the perfect programme for restoring your condition and strengthening if you are trying to cultivate longer locks. To keep up good habits at home bag a Number 3 and 6 with £10 off  when purchasing both throughout Dec! Quote PERFECT10 when processing your bill.

And perhaps with all these unwelcome restrictions you are feeling the need to reinvent yourself? Certainly in July this was the case, which sent our creativity into over drive! I am personally obsessed with warm tones right now. Think Anya Taylor-joy’s amber bob in the Queens Gambit….Simply dreamy, her bone structure (!) and one to watch. If you’re feeling shy you could simply warm up your blonde, with a little ‘quartz tone’ for a similar vibe? An edgy, statement pop or just a barely there ‘whisper’ will make you feel brand new and our fashion toner ‘smoothies’ are super nutritious, so your condition will sing. Shape wise the ‘shag’ is still going strong and suits any face shape/hair texture. We stock some great wands to help you create texture, so we will share some styling tips on Social Media soon. I also love a heavy lob this time of year, with a short ‘gamine’ fringe NB please wait for the professionals for your new fringe! Only 13 days to go- so get planning on Pinterest!

Let’s Talk Fashion.

Re winter fashion – do you like me, question every year, what you used to wear pre cut offs and flip flops?? I pack my redundant winter gear away every spring with gay abandon, then convince myself on the other side I have nothing to wear! Well I have plenty of lovely garments and like many am trying to reign in spending considerably, so my first recommendation is to apply the good old ‘make do and mend’ theory. My lovely Mother in Law gifted me a sewing box recently and I have found myself, surprisingly, utilising it to swap buttons on shirts, customise pieces I may have fallen out of love with and repair snags (cats)! I wasn’t much of a Charity shop goer historically, but a client of ours has been sourcing some very impressive pieces in Clifton, and finding a sneaky bargain on a trawl really does boost morale don’t you think? I have always used fabulous tailor Helena at Zip and Pin for anything beyond my textiles remit and would highly recommend if you want to breathe new life into discarded garms.

My birthday is in November, so I always enjoy perusing the new seasons stock for a ‘key piece’, treat around now… On my Wishlist this year: biker boots, a versatile winter tote & a stylish toasty warm coat feature. I am also a big fan of layering. Being a Hairdresser I’m loathed to always wear black, so why not don a bright turtle neck under black or grey knits to cheer yourself up?

With boots you need flattering skinny jeans or tailored leggings. J crew, Citizens of Humanity and Zara offer a great range. Plaid is always present come the Fall. I have seen some beautiful checked wool coats (this classic in a boxy shape will never date). Lumberjack shirts are not just for boys either and a ‘shacket’ is a valuable staple betwixt.  Colours wise, always go for what suits your personal colouring. I just adore earthy tones for daywear like these pull on cords from Toast and jewel palettes for dressing up.

When it comes to boots and bags, there is so much scope. I absorb high fashion then seek reasonable alternatives. My all time favourite brand is Free People for edgy girls and Sorrel and Hunter offer practical footwear for outdoor pursuits, never compromising on style.

But really, its all about the knit…

Nothing feels more like a prohibited hug, than a soft, snuggly jumper. Choose wisely, the wrong fabric will have you itching like mad, overheating if synthetic or loosing shape after one wash. Cashmere doesn’t come cheap, but a well looked after piece, can live forever. There are a plethora on the high street but I was lucky enough to win a snood (featured above) from amazing local designer Amber Hards  and now covet her entire collection.

Right now we all should be supporting talented Independent businesses. Not only do you bag a less generic piece comme Les Masses but you are also investing in an artisan business, where an individual has beautifully crafted something with love.

Much like our own mission statement, I wholeheartedly believe in this and understand first hand the challenges we entrepreneurs face currently. I have been so impressed by how certain businesses have diversified through this crisis and although we are surviving, to thrive and ensure our future, we need support from our audiences.

As I said, you don’t need to spend an arm and a leg. There are many ways you can help a business you love, from writing a positive review online. Recommending them to friends and tagging them in online posts, will boost traffic and bolster reputation. It may take you just ten minutes, but it will mean so much more to the recipient. There is a new hashtag du jour, ‘#AmazOFF’  stimulating a big push to support local, rather than feeding the gargantuan machine Amazon. Small steps from individuals really hold weight now. You may feel helpless in the face of our current context, but you really possess the power to make change, so please be conscious and use your superpowers for the greater good!

Celebrating our Local Independents

You are likely utilising this time to purchase gifts for Christmas online so here are a few of my favourite local brands to offer some inspiration! Be sure to sign up to our newsletter, as subscribers will also receive exclusive discounts!

Shy Mimosa

During Lockdown 1.0 I ran out of perfume, so got in touch with local trader Maria at Shy Mimosa. If you haven’t discovered this bijou treasure trove I simply must suggest a look for Christmas. I personally love a unique fragrance and change what I fancy seasonally. Maria surpassed my expectation with a selection of samples, with delightful descriptions by post. I opted for a fresh cut grass/ bergamot ‘green’ scent called ‘Run of the River’ which honestly lifted my mood with every spray. I naturally finished the bottle within 2 months (there was a lot of mood lifting required ok?!) so popped in to see Maria again in October.

We had a great chat about what fragrance suits what season, but Maria advocates being instinctively drawn to what ‘lifts’ you. I first purchased an incredible fragrance called ‘Still Life in Rio’ which has notes of coconut & lemon that literally transport me to sunnier climes. It may be my ‘signature’! Myself and Annabelle also highly recommend a consultation with Maria for your ‘wedding day fragrance’. Not to put too fine a point on this, but this aroma will remind you of your day FOREVER so treat yourself to a visit. We will have some seasonal samples to try at Atelier when we re-open and Maria has extended a 10% off promo to all our wonderful subscribers!

Wild Source

The connection we can feel from a scent leads nicely onto my next recommendation… My new obsession is Wild Source Apothecary. As you know our Atelier rituals are back and now elevated with the introduction of their Golden Hour. This crazy new world has forced us all to slow our pace and focus. I have definitely found with more time, I am trying to relish my maintenance routines more. My skin is dry like an Armadillo, so moisturising is required daily and felt a chore. I now have a divine routine of escapism which starts with a steaming hot bath and exfoliation with ‘Wild Source Detox Scrub’, accompanied by a ginger infused G&T and then a rich application of Golden Hour for body and Night Nectar for face. The oil can be massaged with a gua sha to further tone, stimulate lymphatic drainage and release tension in the jaw and forehead.

I feel the process is meditative and Wild Source are releasing beautiful guided meditations for those of you who have not ventured here before. Wild Source have also extended a 15% promotion for Atelier newsletter subscribers, so get onboard with ‘rituals not routines’ and transform your own bathroom into a luxury Spa!

Blomme

Our salon blinds may be down at present, but only because, we have Bloome creating a winter spectacle for the window whilst closed!

During the lockdown, Blomme founder Nicole took to the road to bring her fabulous dried creations straight to your door. I treated a friend to an incredible everlasting bouquet as a surprise and think these are fantastic value compared to fleeting fresh flowers. We can’t wait to show off our winter display but for wreaths and wow worthy arrangements or gifts, check out another Artisan genius.

Foliage Cafe

On your next visit, we also suggest you indulge further with a treat from our delightful neighbours at Foliage Cafe. Since we couldn’t serve refreshments we have recommended all our guests enjoy great coffee and delicious homemade snacks from Foliage. We can get your order delivered and at 10% off for Atelier staff and customers.

Thanks Alex, I enjoy seeing a nice (fast moving I might add) queue forming from our reception. Here’s to supporting one another, playing to our strengths and making people smile through hard times.

We will prevail, we will enjoy humble Christmases this year perhaps, but with a focus on the true meaning. I will not forget the kindness shown to me this year when I have needed it, pass it on people.

Ciao for now… and we really look forward to seeing you all when we reopen our doors on 3rd December!
